NEWS and EVENTS:
Holy Doors – Jubilee of Mercy
On April 11, 2015, Pope Francis announced in his “bull of indiction”, or formal proclamation, “an Extraordinary Jubilee that has the mercy of God at its center. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy.” This Jubilee Holy Year opened on December 8, 2015 - the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception - and will end on November 20, 2016, with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Millions of pilgrims are expected to journey to Rome to participate in the Jubilee year events. The first extraordinary Jubilee was called in the 16th century, and the most recent ones have been in 1933 and in 1983.
Each of the four papal basilicas in Rome – St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major - has a holy door, which is only opened during jubilee years so that pilgrims can enter through them in order to gain the plenary indulgence that is connected with the Jubilee.
Notre-Dame de Québec basilica became the seventh Holy Door in the Catholic world in 2013 — four are in Rome, one is at the Shrine of St. John Vianney in Ars-sur-Formans, France, the other is the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
However, for the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis also wants a Door of Mercy in each diocese. In Lourdes, France, this door is at St. Michael’s gate entrance to the Sanctuary near the Breton Cross. In the Holy Land (Israel) there are Holy Doors at the Basilica of Gesthemane in Jerusalem, St. Catherine’s Church in Bethlehem, and the Basilica of Annunciation in Nazareth. In Poland Holy Doors are at St. John’s Archcathedral in Warsaw, Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Kakow, Basilica in Niepokalanow, Basilica in Wadowice, and the Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.
